What is Homeopathy?

A 200-year-old system of natural healing — and the German spagyric craft behind every PEKANA remedy.

Homeopathy is a system of natural medicine built on the idea that a substance capable of producing certain symptoms in a healthy person can, in a highly diluted form, help the body respond to similar symptoms in someone who is unwell. Rather than targeting a single disease, homeopathic practitioners look at the whole person — their symptoms, constitution, and circumstances — before selecting a remedy.

It's one of the most widely practiced forms of complementary medicine in Europe today, and it's the tradition PEKANA has worked within since the early 1980s, from its family-run workshop in Kißlegg, Germany.

Where It Began

Homeopathy traces back to 1796, when German physician Dr. Samuel Hahnemann — a trained chemist and translator as well as a physician — grew skeptical of a claim in a medical text he was translating: that cinchona bark cured malaria because of its bitterness. Testing it on himself, he developed fever and chills resembling malaria itself, even though he wasn't sick. That observation led him to a theory he called similia similibus curentur — "let likes be cured by likes."

Over the next two decades, Hahnemann refined this idea into a full system of medicine, publishing his findings in The Organon of the Healing Art. By the early 1800s, homeopathy had spread across Europe, and it remains widely practiced today, particularly in Germany, France, and the wider EU.

Three Core Principles

Whatever the remedy or the practitioner, classical homeopathy rests on the same three ideas:

Law of Similars

A substance that produces certain symptoms in a healthy person is used, in remedy form, to address similar symptoms in someone unwell — "like cures like."

Minimum Dose

Remedies are prepared through repeated dilution and vigorous shaking (succussion) — a process homeopaths call potentization — to reduce a substance to a gentle, minimal dose.

The Individual

Two people with the same complaint may receive different remedies. Homeopathic case-taking looks at the whole person, not just an isolated symptom.

PEKANA's Spagyric Approach

PEKANA works within a specific branch of homeopathy known as spagyric medicine — a plant-processing method dating back to the Renaissance physician Paracelsus. Rather than extracting a single active compound, the spagyric process is designed to keep a medicinal plant's full profile intact: its oils, minerals, and other constituents together, as they occur in nature.

In PEKANA's workshop, this means:

  • Fresh, organically grown medicinal plants, cleaned and processed by hand
  • Cold maceration (no heat) to gently open the plant cells
  • A slow, yeast-based fermentation that develops the base tincture
  • Careful potentization to complete the homeopathic-spagyric remedy

Included in the German Homeopathic Pharmacopoeia

PEKANA's spagyric process was included in the first German Homeopathic Pharmacopoeia in 1991, and the company was awarded the State of Baden-Württemberg's Innovation Prize in 1995 for its development of the method.

Homeopathy Today

Homeopathy is practiced worldwide, with its strongest footholds in Germany, France, India, and the UK, and it sits alongside — not in place of — conventional medicine in most of the countries where it's regulated. In Pakistan, homeopathy has a recognized place within the country's complementary and alternative medicine landscape, with bodies such as the National Council for Homeopathy overseeing homeopathic education.

What the Science Says

Homeopathy is a genuinely divided topic between practitioners and mainstream medical science, and it's worth understanding both sides. Large evidence reviews — including the UK's 2010 Science and Technology Committee report and a 2015 assessment by Australia's National Health and Medical Research Council — concluded that homeopathic remedies perform no better than placebo across the conditions they examined. At the same time, some meta-analyses of individualized homeopathic prescribing (rather than a single remedy for a single diagnosis) have reported small effects beyond placebo, and homeopathy's supporters point to two centuries of clinical use and observational data as reason to keep researching it.

Mainstream medical bodies — including Germany's own health regulators — classify homeopathy as complementary medicine, not a replacement for conventional diagnosis or treatment. We think that's the right way to understand it too.

Using Homeopathic Remedies Responsibly

  • PEKANA products are homeopathic-spagyric remedies, not pharmaceutical drugs.
  • They're intended to be used per general homeopathic principles, or on the advice of a qualified practitioner.
  • Results vary from person to person.
  • Nothing on this page replaces diagnosis, treatment, or advice from a licensed doctor or homeopath — please consult one for any ongoing or serious health concern.
